The Passover of my dreams… well, not quite

April 9th, 2009 by Kristi Stephens

So, it’s finally Easter week. I have been looking forward to Easter this year more than ever before! I really have been doing a lot of thinking about how to make this season more memorable and meaningful for my family…

Since my daughter just turned three, there are a lot of things I’d like to incorporate down the road but she’s just not quite old enough yet to “get it.” One thing that has been rolling around in my head is how to incorporate Passover more into our celebration.

We’re planning to do a Seder dinner with my family the week after Easter (due to travel arrangements), which I am REALLY looking forward to! Since today is officially “Passover,” I was thinking about how to at least talk about it some at dinner. I was excited about reading the Passover story from The Jesus Storybook Bible, because the explanation of Jesus washing the disciples feet and the last supper is so good! (Did I mention I’m having a giveaway for this book?) I was also thinking about somehow incorporating a mini-footwashing ceremony into our meal and talking about how Jesus washes us clean in our hearts.

It wasn’t going to be flashy this year, but I wanted to make it special. Things did not exactly go as planned…

At 4:00pm when I started making dinner, I realized that I had been planning to make sweet and sour pork for dinner tonight! Pork! So, right off the bat, this is not exactly Passover fare!

As my husband and I were laughing about that, AG came running into the kitchen wearing a sheep costume of all things! We’re eating pork on Passover and our daughter is dressed as a sheep? Things were falling apart fast.

We really enjoyed our unclean Chinese food. We did read the Last Supper story and had some good discussion. And then the raging diaper rash/ diarrhea event interrupted any semblance of picturesque-ness that was left. No foot washing, although washing of other things was involved…

Oh, well- we start small. Hopefully next year will be more kosher, less smelly, and the sheep will not be running around singing…

Happy Passover! :)
