My mini-me

January 29th, 2010 by Kristi Stephens

AG mimicking Mom and Grandma after LB was born!

As AG nears her 4th birthday, I am becoming more and more aware of how much she is watching me… and trying to be like me.  It is exciting, humbling… terrifying!

A couple of days ago she wanted to “type” – she thinks it’s fun if I open a new word document and just let her type letters.  She looked at me very seriously and said, “I have a lot of work to do.  I need to write something on the computer to tell people that Jesus loves them.”  [Somehow that was convicting and encouraging at the same time!]

Wednesday as I was preparing for an evening Bible study that was held at our house, AG announced to me, “did you know that my Bible study day is tomorrow?”  I asked her what she was learning about and she said, “Oh, I’m not one of the ladies IN the Bible study.  I teach them.”  “What do you do in your Bible study?” I wondered.  “We read the Bible.  And then we make… big people crafts.”  [And if you are curious, as I was, what a 'big people craft' might be, apparently they make Bibles in their Bible study.  A little Gutenberg in the making!]

I asked her if she wanted to know what I do in my Bible studies – she did.  I told her that we read God’s Word, study it very closely to see what it says and what God is telling us, and then we talk about what it means to love God and obey Him.  “Oh, that’s what we do, too.” :)

Yesterday during her rest time I was helping her after she went to the bathroom and she told me that she was working hard – she had a lot of cleaning to do.  “I’ve been cleaning and vacuuming, just like you!”  Then, last night as I put her to bed, she was discussing how she had taken care of her baby dolls during rest time.  She had plates of plastic food and silverware all arranged for them, and they were lovingly tucked into the envelope-backs of her flannel pillow shams like little sleeping bags!  “I’m a good mommy,” she announced.  “I’m a good mommy, sometimes.”

I know the feeling, kid.  Oh, Lord – keep me close to You!  Little eyes are watching… How I long to be able to tell her, “follow me, as I follow Christ.”  …’cause she’s definitely following me somewhere!

Tackling LB’s room… and reflecting on God’s blessings

January 28th, 2010 by Kristi Stephens

A few reflections as I cleaned out LB’s messy closet today -

How can I complain about laundry baskets that overflow and closets stuffed with too much clothing?
We have been blessed abundantly. I never wonder if my family will have clothing on their backs.
How can I complain about dirty dishes and unorganized pantries?
Those dirty dishes mean we ate today, the pantry means we will eat tomorrow. My family has never gone hungry.
How can I complain about cleaning my house or dust that has accumulated?
We are not living on the streets. We have a beautiful, safe, and comfortable home.

The Church in Haiti – report from Mark Driscoll and James McDonald

January 27th, 2010 by Kristi Stephens

This video is long – almost an hour and a half.

But, please find the time to watch it.

Mark Driscoll and James McDonald traveled to Haiti to begin an organization called “Churches Helping Churches.” They traveled a week after the earthquake with the intent of finding out how the local church was fairing.

It is moving. Powerful. And the church must act.

Some of the footage is graphic – please do not watch this with small children.

WFMW: A little mommy tip

January 27th, 2010 by Kristi Stephens

I must confess: sometimes I have my son drink out of a pink sippy cup.

What can I say?  When his cups are all in the dishwasher, sometimes I need a quick fix.

I have several pink sippy cups, and often AG and LB end up both drinking out of identical cups… which can get tricky to keep them apart.

The perfect solution: colored silicone bracelets.  They slip on, stay on, and let me color code the cups!  I can even leave them on when I put the cups in the dishwasher!

Right now, I use red ones for my son.  My sister in law, who has four children, color codes everything – water bottles, Easter baskets, etc – the kids always know which one is whose because of their assigned colors.  This would be a great, easy solution for color-coding cups and water bottles if you have multiple kids of your own, if you have a home day care, etc!
