The “Change” of Prevention

April 1st, 2010 by Kristi Stephens

Don’t miss out on the Pearls of Hope pendant/chain giveaway from Women at Risk!

Gillian Ferwerda of Women at Risk, International will be sharing amazing posts with us during the Redeemed series– I pray you will join us and be changed through it!

Tanvi’s Story
Nepal

Tanvi found herself orphaned as a teenager, with a younger brother to care for. Desperate for a job, she wound up in a dance bar restaurant, then as a prostitute, and finally as a “personal lady” for a man. All this so that she and her brother could survive.

Staff at the Nepal micro-bakery reached out to her, inviting her to work at the bakery, an offer for a better life.

She accepted and with their help left prostitution. She now attends school in the mornings and in the afternoons works in the micro-bakery and makes jewelry during the frequent electrical outages.

Tanvi is still healing from her past but she is proud that she can support herself and her brother in an honorable way.

What if someone had intervened before Tanvi ended up being prostituted? What if someone had given her education, job skills, and a small micro-loan? Perhaps her life would have looked very different, and she would have been prevented from being raped physically and emotionally time after time.

Women At Risk, International (WAR, Int’l) knows that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and we offer micro-loans to women at risk before they are introduced to horror. Our Nepal micro-bakery, Cambodian café, Paraguay micro-business, and Dominican Republic dress shop are small microenterprises that also hire at risk women. Micro-loans for women have proven to be a powerful and effective developmental aid tool.

Experts declare:

“[C]rucially, aid has often been most effective when aimed at women and girls; when policy wonks do the math, they often find that these investments have a net economic return. Only a small portion of aid specifically targets women or girls, but increasingly donors are recognizing that that is where they often get the most bang for the buck.”[1]

“‘Investment in girls’ education may well be the highest-return investment available in the developing world,” Larry Summers, chief economist of the World Bank.[2]

“’Gender inequality hurts economic growth,’ Goldman Sachs concluded in a 2008 research report that emphasized how much developing countries could improve their economic performance by educating girls.”[3]

For you

Because we have been rescued by Christ, we are to carry out his mission on earth to rescue others spiritually and physically.

Our Lord certainly never overlooked physical needs, but he was aware of the great spiritual need as well. He has called us to be part of God’s great plan to reach the world and spread the knowledge of the true way, life, and the truth (Matthew 28:19; Acts 1:8; John 14:6).

He has called us to show true freedom, redemption, abundant life, and his life, strength, and power for the present age (John 10:10; John 14:6; Philippians 4:13; Colossians 1:29). We can be part of his work to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners (Isaiah 61:1).
