Scripture memory for Mom

October 12th, 2012 by Kristi Stephens

Lately I’ve been talking a lot about fun ways to help your kids memorize Scripture. But what about Mom?

I’m excited to tell you about a resource that I’ve recently found to be extremely helpful for reaching my own memorization goals – ScriptureTyper.com!

Now, a disclaimer: for whatever reason, I sorta like to type. I like typing speed games and I like to compete against myself. Have I completely lost you? I know it’s a little nerdy. It is what it is, you know. :)

That being said, ScriptureTyper has been right up my alley because it feels like a game, and that’s why I think you might like it, too.

When you first go to ScriptureTyper and create a FREE account, you can either select Bible verses to memorize from various pre-existing plans (on topics like forgiveness, freedom from sin, etc.), or you can import your own verses. Personally, I have challenged myself to memorize the book of Ephesians, so I imported my verses from BibleGateway.com. This was the “clunkiest” part of the process, since every time I brought verses over from BibleGateway I had to delete the verse numbers and footnotes (I like to memorize in fluid chunks). There might be some elegant and easy solution to this problem that I was unable to figure out! :)

Once you have the verses imported that you are working on memorizing, you can choose whether you would like to type it, memorize it, or master it.

When you select “type it,” the program monitors your typing speed as you type the text of your verses displayed on the screen. This typing speed becomes the baseline for determining when you have memorized the verse in the “memorize it” step. {Added bonus – if you want to work on your typing speed, have a student who is working on typing, or you need to know your words-per-minute for some reason, this is an easy way to find out that number!}

As you type in the box, the words you type correctly turn green on the screen, and incorrect words are red.

In the “memorize it” step, this same process (green correct words, red incorrect) is followed, only now some of your text is missing, appearing only after you type in the correct words.

In the “master it” step, no text is given to you, but the same green and red words help you know if you are remembering the verse correctly.

On either the “memorize” or “master” level, if you’re stuck you can get a hint by typing ^ (Shift 6). {See the text that appeared next to the “hint” button below?}

This program is free, easy, and effective (at least it has been for me!). I love pulling it up and working on my verses each day – it does feel like a game to me, as I’m able to challenge my own times and rankings and increase the number of verses I’ve worked on at ScriptureTyper.

The site is FREE to use on your desktop or laptop, and there is also an app available for iPhone and iPad. The app is only $3.99, but wouldn’t free be even better? The nice people behind ScriptureTyper are providing five of my readers a code for a free app download. First come, first serve! The only thing you need to do is leave a comment below this post letting me know that you’d like to memorize with the ScriptureTyper app! No strings attached or hoops you have to jump through before you enter – I just want you to dig into the Word.

Ready, set, TYPE!
