Motherhood and the Me-Monster

April 8th, 2010 by Kristi Stephens

Epidural or natural childbirth?

Nursing or bottle feeding?

Pacifier or no pacifier?

Cloth or disposable?

Co-sleeping or in the nursery?

Vaccinate or not?

The debates swirl. The amount of heated discussion about these topics has fascinated me since I first became pregnant with AG. I have my opinions about all of the above, and I’m sure you do, too. Add in competitive-feeling discussions about when our children slept through the night, started solid food, potty trained, etc… and it makes me want to avoid other mothers, to be perfectly honest!

My question is: why are we all so angry about everything? Why can so many of these discussions turn hateful and petty?

The Forgiven Much

April 2nd, 2010 by Kristi Stephens

O Lord, you took up my case;
you redeemed my life.

Lamentations 3:58

I’m posting over at Pleasing to You today with some Good Friday reflections.  Where would you have been?  Kneeling with the sinful woman at Jesus’ feet, or nodding in agreement with Simon the Pharisee?

I never set out to be an abolitionist…

March 25th, 2010 by Kristi Stephens

Last week, Sandra was kindly helping to get the word out about a human trafficking series I have been running on my blog.  She wrote, “One of my on-line friends, Kristi Stephens, has a mission. Her mission is to help rescue women and children from human trafficking.”

In a weird sort of way it was uncomfortable to see in writing – someone else’s writing – that freeing victims of human trafficking is my mission.  I never felt “called” to fight human trafficking.  There was no clear sign from God.  I didn’t wake up one day and decide to be an abolitionist.

Tackling LB’s room… and reflecting on God’s blessings

January 28th, 2010 by Kristi Stephens

A few reflections as I cleaned out LB’s messy closet today -

How can I complain about laundry baskets that overflow and closets stuffed with too much clothing?
We have been blessed abundantly. I never wonder if my family will have clothing on their backs.
How can I complain about dirty dishes and unorganized pantries?
Those dirty dishes mean we ate today, the pantry means we will eat tomorrow. My family has never gone hungry.
How can I complain about cleaning my house or dust that has accumulated?
We are not living on the streets. We have a beautiful, safe, and comfortable home.
