One Summer, One Story

Three months, 66 books, one story, one amazing God. We won’t cover it all – every tiny piece is inspired and important, but for this series, we will focus on the larger picture – that “Magic Eye” picture that pops out if we see the Bible as a whole. It is my prayer that this series will springboard you into deeper study of your own – a deeper thirst for Scripture, a thirst to know more of our great God, a strengthened faith from seeing the broad strokes of his pen in this stunningly beautiful plan He has written for us to read.

  • Coming Soon… – Background on what motivated this series
  • Why We Need the Story! – How does knowing God’s bigger story in Scripture make a real difference in our daily lives?
  • The Point of it All – HE is the point of The Story. HE is the point of my story. HE is the point of it all! [Genesis 1]
  • The Image-Bearers – Humanity’s creation, purpose, and value [Genesis 2]
  • Shaking in the Bushes – We were made for intimate relationship with the Almighty God – but Eden has broken us, our own sin has shattered us.
  • Hidden Grace – The curse in Genesis 3 is like a mirror reflecting a spiritual reality we cannot see.
  • Hope for the Broken – God did not abandon us in our brokenness – the Gospel begins unfolding in Eden!
  • Future Redeemer, Present Salvation – It’s always about Jesus – even in the Garden!
  • Enmity – Cain & Abel, Lamech and Enoch, and the beginning of the ongoing war between those who refuse to follow God and those who obey Him.
  • Cataclysmic Judgment and Cartoon Animals – One lone man surrendered to God among an entire world of people surrendered to depravity. The worldwide flood is a disturbing reminder of God’s holy wrath against sin, and a vivid illustration of how desperate we are for His unmerited favor.
  • Babel.com – The spirit of the Tower of Babel is more than a love of teamwork and skyscrapers – it is seeking our own way, seeking our own significance apart from Him, refusing to bow our will to His.
  • So Abram Left – the Abrahamic covenant, and how real faith demands action
  • Know For Certain – Trusting even when God’s timetable is far different than ours, and “Cutting Covenant” in Genesis 15
  • Helping God – Sarai’s plan to “help” God through Hagar does not turn out well! Learning that God doesn’t need our “help!”
  • El Roi: The God Who Sees – {VLOG} Devotional thoughts on the God who sees us
  • Laughter – Abraham, Sarah, and an impossible promise: God’s plans for our lives are often impossible. Laughable. They push our faith to the limits.
  • Mountain Top Surrender – Abraham and Isaac on Mount Moriah – is our faith in God, or just in the good “stuff” He has given us?
  • Aliens and Strangers – The Death of Sarah, and a poignant illustration that this world is not our home.
  • The Shepherd of our Lives – Jacob’s testimony is a reminder to us all – nothing is irredeemable. He has shepherded us all our lives to this day!
  • The Lord is With You – Lessons from Joseph: Do you want God to use you greatly? You may be wounded deeply along the way.
  • For When You Feel Forgotten – The Israelites enslaved in Egypt: Are you feeling forgotten in your suffering? He is aware, He loves you and knows you intimately.
  • The only One – The plagues against Egypt were not random acts of destruction – each was a theological statement revealing God as the King of kings, the Lord of lords, the only One worthy of our worship.
  • The Lamb died, and now I live – The significance of Passover, and Jesus as our Lamb of God!
  • Faith School – Two million wandering Israelites, and the process of learning to trust God.
  • Chosen, Treasured, Set Apart for a Purpose – OT law; The uniqueness of Israel, the Mosaic law, and past-tense versus present-tense faith in action.
  • God Dwelling Among Men – OT law; God wants relationship with us. He wants to dwell among us.
  • Be Holy, for I am Holy – OT law; God was commanding His people to act in a way consistent with His character.
  • Heart of Rebellion – When small complaints reveal serious problems
  • When the Manna Stops – God’s provision for His people became less obvious when they entered the land – and as we grow in Christ, He may not come crashing and thundering into our lives, but ask us to abide in faith.
  • Not a Word Failed – Reading through the dividing of the land in Joshua may seem tedious, but it reminds us that our God is faithful and able to conquer whatever “giants” may be in our lives today!
